International Negotiation Competition

Having won the Scottish final of the International Negotiation Competition, the University of Glasgow's Diploma in Professional Legal Practice team travelled to South Korea where they represented Scotland in the International Competition hosted by Handong University. The team was ranked in fourth place out of 19 countries participating. The USA won the competition. Scotland was represented by Rebecca Barrass and David Hayward , who have just competed the Diploma and are both about to commence traineeships with Macroberts and DLA respectively.In the initial three rounds, Scotland was involved in negotiating complex commercial contract scenarios with teams from Germany, Norway and Japan. Other teams competing included USA, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, Switzerland , Russia, India and Singapore.

The team was accompanied by Robert Skinner, advocate , a member of Terra Firma Chambers, who has coached the team on a pro bono basis. Robert is also a member of the Glasgow Legal 40, a group of legal alumni of the University of Glasgow which provides a networking and mentoring service, exclusively for Glasgow Diploma students.

The competition provides a supportive educational and competitive environment in which law students can appreciate the significance of effective communication and negotiation in representing clients, structuring transactions, and resolving disputes.

Since its inception five years ago, The University of Glasgow's Diploma in Professional Legal Practice has achieved great success in both the International Client Consultation Competition and International Negotiation Competition, representing Scotland in one or other or both competitions in 2011,2012,2013 and 2014.
